Amongst The Peas And Carrots

(To My Old Buddy Rocket)

Amongst the peas and carrots, the lonely veteran roams.

Looking for more than his next meal,

he's looking for his next home.

Oh look what someone threw away,

a perfectly good pocket comb!

Amongst the peas and carrots, he'll spend another night.

A place to rest his weary head,

on his seemingly endless plight.

With lucky Charley won't sneak,

 back into his dreams tonight.

Amongst the peas and carrots, is where he can think.

The memories of yesteryear still haunt him,

but maybe, he'll find something to drink.

You never know what he might find there,

maybe shoes, maybe the kitchen sink.

Amongst the peas and carrots, dives this Army Seal.

Searching for hidden treasure,

 each new dive may reveal.

He wonders what treasure lies

 just below that banana peel?

Amongst the peas and Carrots, he's found a way to survive.

For now he'll settle for that,

he's still fighting for his life.

He wonders what ever happened,

to his children and his wife?

Amongst the peas and carrots, is where he gets his clothes.

But the wear and tear on his soul,

 is what really shows.

Before you pass judgment remember,

this isn't the life that he chose.

Amongst the peas and carrots, a fallen warrior stands.

So what if he looks a little dirty,

there's no more blood on his hands.

Where were you when he had to serve,

in some now forgotten foreign land?

Amongst the peas and carrots, his whole world in a sack.

As you pass him on your way home,

in your brand new Cadillac,

remember he'll never go home,

because he really never came back.

Amongst the peas and carrots, shaded from the sun.

The children throw rocks at him,

they're just having a little fun.

So what if they call him names...

I wonder if he still carries a, "Oh shit!"

Amongst the peas and carrots, his country put him there.

We gave up on him decades ago,

he's even given up on prayer.

Hey, where do you think he found,

that thousand yards of stare?

Amongst the peas and carrots, he'll make his final stand.

One nation, indivisible, under God,

gee ,that sounds so grand.

"All for one and one for all!"

Where are you now, with your helping hand?

Amongst the peas and carrots, the lonely veteran roams.

By choice or by chance, or just plain circumstance,

he laid his life on the line for you and me.

Thank the Lord it's not your son or daughter,

and while you're upon your knees,

take a look through a veterans' eyes,

try to see what he sees.

For there lies this Great Nation,

amongst the carrots and peas!
